Theory Test for Your Driving License in Norway: How to Pass

To get your driving license in Norway, you must pass the theory test, which can be quite a stressful event for many. Statistics across the country show that 42% fail the theory test on the first try. This is a sad statistic, isn’t it? Well, in this short article, I will try to show you the best way to prepare. This method is not only the least time-consuming but also the cheapest.

What You Should NOT Do

In the past, people prepared for the theory test with a book called “Veien til førekortet” (or “The Road to Your Driving License” in English). It’s a complete guide with all the theory you should know as a driver. But now we are in 2025, and while the book might still work, the software is better.

Some would argue, but I tell you—the problem with the book is that after you finish studying it, you will still fail a lot of questions on the test. Personally, I have seen questions that were not covered in the book. Or maybe they were, but I didn’t pay much attention to those sentences. And believe me, it will slip in your case as well. Because you don’t know what to look out for, and it’s nearly impossible to memorize the whole book anyway.

So, don’t waste your time and money on this method.

What You Should Do

I recommend going straight to the webpage teoritentamen.no. You can get an app or study online from the computer. This program has both English and Norwegian versions. And this is not an advertisement, as much as I would want to get paid for my articles.

This program works great, and if you use it correctly, you will get results in minimal time.

How to Go On with Your Studies

  1. Define how much time you are ready to invest in studying.
  2. Buy access to Teoritentamen based on the timeline you planned.

When I was preparing, I set a 10-day frame for myself and booked a theory test via statensvegvesen.no 10 days ahead. I chose to pay for 7 days of the app and get the maximum out of it.

When you come to their price page, you will see that it’s quite expensive. They charge 499 NOK for 30 days of access, 229 NOK for 7 days, and 95 NOK for 24 hours of access. The program is totally worth it and surely gives more value than just buying a theory book that costs 300 to 400 NOK, depending on where you buy it.

So, don’t be greedy but also think about how much time you can realistically spend every day on tests and learning theory. And go from there.

I was doing 4-5 tests a day, each time reading into the questions that I got wrong. What is great about this app is that for every wrong answer, you get an explanation of the theory and can also check the statistics after you’ve done a few tests. The statistics will show which categories you are failing the most. For me, it was the mechanics of the car. First of all, because I’m a girl and I have no idea about it (I know that’s a bad excuse). Also, I chose to do all the studying in Norwegian and needed to learn a bunch of unfamiliar words related to cars, and it was twice as confusing because Norwegian is not my mother tongue.

Another cool thing about Teoritentamen is that you can not only read all the theory but also watch a lot of videos, take tests, and play games after each chapter as you read the theory and test yourself. And, of course, the statistics part is great.

Anywho, by the end of the week, I had most of the tests with none or only 1-2 mistakes, which is good. On the real test, you are allowed to make up to 7 mistakes.

Comparing App Tests and the Real One

Tests in the app are much harder, and the questions on the real test were easier. But again, maybe I got lucky with the questions. On the real test, I was unsure about two of my answers, but it turned out that I chose correctly anyway. So, I passed without mistakes.

When Booking Your Time for the Test, Remember:

You can book a spot for the test at any traffic station in Norway. It doesn’t need to be the one in your city. This advice is mostly for people who live in busy cities like Oslo, for example. When I booked my test, I didn’t find an available spot at the Oslo traffic station for the dates I wanted. It was all booked out two months in advance. So, I chose to take a 15-minute train to the Lillestrøm traffic station, where there were a lot of available slots at the time.

On the day of your test, you should have your ID with you and be ready to pay a fee for your test plus a small registration fee. Be aware that they will take a picture of you that day before the test. This is the picture that will be on your driving permit when you get it. So, fix yourself up if it’s important to you.

A Few Things That Are Good to Know About the Theory Test:

  • For some categories of driving licenses, you can take the test in a few different languages.
  • The B category can be done in Norwegian, Saami, English, Arabic, Sorani, and Turkish. You can also request your test in another language beforehand (check on statensvegvesen).
  • For some categories, there will be a calculator and paper/pen available.
  • The test for category B lasts 90 minutes. You have the right to ask for an extra 15 minutes.
  • You will see your remaining time on the screen during the test.
  • You can go back and forth between the questions, so if you are not sure, just jump to the next one and come back later to those you were unsure about.
  • For the B category, there are 45 questions, and you need 38 correct answers to pass. You can make a maximum of 7 mistakes, as I mentioned before. On the Vegvesen page, you can find the time and number of questions/mistakes for other categories, as they are all different.
  • Here you can see a list of topics for the test in English that is attached on statensvegvesen.no.

To sum up everything we’ve discussed in one sentence: Be clear with your timeframe for studying to minimize your spending, don’t waste your money on books to prepare if you have limited time, and remember that the more tests you take in the app, the easier it will be on the real one.
